That is well said. I think my “difficult to grok” comment is in part referencing the esoteric traditional DX7 interface and the fact it take a lot of time to be able think of a sound and just find it with FM synthesis unless we are dealing with simpler two operator types. I get some useful results with experimentation. The Korg Opsix though yields more predictable results.
I wouldn’t say that FM (Yamaha style PM) is “hard to grok” as much as it’s presented poorly. Software is a bit better, but it didn’t click for me until I tried an iOS app called FM4. I watched a tutorial on FM in general and followed along with the app and all of the sudden it just clicked. I wouldn’t say that I can get to a sound that I’m after in the same way that I can with other forms of synthesis, but now I know how to properly explore.
