Hi there, I stumbled on your post and I wanted to reply to tell how we did it back then.
1.I want to ask what synths were used mainly in those years 98'-2005
We used Cubase 5.1 and stock plugins and the vanguard / Albino software synth and the VB-1 bass plugin. ALso Fm7 was used on a few tracks. The first album was written in 10 days on Nicks computer in Holland. 1 track per day. Very simple progressive style. Focus was to make most use of the few plugins we had. We didnt use any compression and almost no eq. We slapped a double delay (ping pong) on the bass lines and didnt care about stereo bass problems. we did what we liked.
2.What kind of multibands were used for phase coloring bassline or did they even do it?![Very Happy :D]()
What compression? Only compression was in the mastering. We just designed the sound and put it in the volume we liked it. We used zero compression back then. Nowdays yes, but back then no.
3.The groove as i can hear is very 909 shufflish. Any reccomendations on how would i achieve that shuffle expect nudging sample by sample on the roll haha.
Back then we nudged it, the quantise funktion didnt have degrees of swing. We did do something cool with the ping pong delays though that we learned from Bamboo Forest. We set a 8d ping pong and then we added a few milliseconds which creates swing. Old school XD
4.Any info from that time would be useful, techniques, how stuff was done, everything to the core.
There is nothing to it really. It is a very simple album. I think people hear/ more into it than they should. Some producers say it is crappy production and we agree. It was our early dawn in music making. Had we made it more complex then it would have shown the lack of technique. We kept it veeery simple and open. I believe the strength of the album was the selecting what sounds should go together. To create the pallette. There are not a single "trick" in the album.
5.Also I see that almost every song from this album (Andromeda - Temptations) has a Stereo Bassline, lots of space effects, ping pongs, reverbs maybe and it is masterfully done. And panning on the bass as well. We were inspired by Atmos who had some tracks with bass delays or TOP bass with delays on it. I believed it worked well because I think somehow the delay filtered out some deep bass automatically, or it would have sounds messy =)
SO yeah, first album was done in 10 days and the 2nd one in 1 month. It was sheer joy back then to make music, you know, before one learned more about production and then nothing soundsed good anymore haha. The enthusiasm was 100%. We really loved making these 2 albums.
Made with Scandinavian "vemod" (melancholy), greek food and tsipouro and some amazing drugs back in the days in Holland. If you have any questions then email me on andersnilssondvm@gmail.com and look out for more music soon on dreamvisionmedia.space
